About Tumakuru

A land of saints, coconut groves, ancient temples, and hill fortresses — where spiritual wisdom and agricultural abundance meet on the Deccan plateau

Coconut Capital & Land of Saints

Tumakuru District, located 70 km northwest of Bengaluru, is one of Karnataka's most important districts — a fascinating blend of deep spiritual heritage, agricultural prosperity, and emerging industrial growth. The district earned the name "Kalpataru Bhoomi" (Land of the Wish-Fulfilling Tree) reflecting its abundance — both material, in the form of its vast coconut plantations that make it Karnataka's coconut capital, and spiritual, through the presence of great saints and revered institutions.

The heart of Tumakuru's spiritual identity is the legendary Siddaganga Mutt — home to the beloved Dr. Shivakumara Swamigalu who was affectionately called the "Walking God of Karnataka" and served the poor and students for over a century. The ancient Devarayadurga hill with its fortress and Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple complex at the foot of Nandi Hills is one of Karnataka's oldest and most sacred temple complexes. Tumakuru is also the gateway to Channapatna — the UNESCO-recognised toy-making town famous worldwide for its lacquered wooden toys.

🕉️ Siddaganga Mutt — Living Spiritual Legacy

The Siddaganga Mutt is not just a religious institution — it is a living embodiment of Karnataka's Veerashaiva spiritual tradition. The mutt has educated and fed millions of students over 111 years without charging a single rupee — running the world's largest free annadana (food offering) program. The late Dr. Shivakumara Swamigalu (Trisharana Peeta), who served till age 111, received the Padma Bhushan and was recommended for the Bharat Ratna — Karnataka's most loved spiritual leader of modern times.

🪆 Channapatna Craft Tradition

The Channapatna toy-making tradition was established by Tipu Sultan who invited Persian craftsmen to teach lacquering techniques to local artisans in the 18th century. Today 5,000+ artisan families practice this GI-tagged craft — hand-turning ivory wood (Wrightia tinctoria) on lathes, applying natural dyes, and coating with lac resin to create smooth, non-toxic, eco-friendly toys beloved by children worldwide.

🌴 Coconut Culture & Festivals

The coconut tree is central to life in Tumakuru — every part of the tree is used, from the fruit for oil and milk to the coir for rope, the fronds for thatching, and the trunk for construction. The district celebrates the coconut harvest with community festivals, and the Tiptur Coconut Market is one of Asia's largest coconut trading centres, determining international coconut prices.

🎵 Kannada Folk Arts & Dollu Kunitha

Tumakuru's villages are vibrant with Karnataka folk traditions — Dollu Kunitha drum dance, Gorava Sanna, Kamsale performances, and the Suggi Kunitha harvest dance are performed at every major temple festival and village celebration.
